Searching for specific Revolutionary War information: In Alexander Brown’s papers in Special Collections, there is a reference to an Early Settler’s list containing the following:

Ambrose Tomlinson was on a list as serving in the Rev. War from Old Amherst County.

The Amherst Museum informed me this is where the information is located: Mss. Acc 65 B 83, series 5, box 4 (Series 11 Page Proofs) (exactly as written by the director of the museum.)

I am trying to find out where Mr. Brown got Mr. Tomlinson’s name as having served. Did Mr. Brown leave any references as to where he located this information?

I have searched your website, but with no luck, so I am hoping you can help me. This information is needed to prove ancestry in order to join the DAR and I need documentation.

    Any help will be appreciated.

Hello: I have not located the Alexander Brown papers at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA, and have copies in my possession. This discovery enabled me to qualify for membership in the DAR.

However no one knows where Mr. Brown copied his information, as his sources are all in a code that only he knew.
